STAGES TO LICENCE ACQUISITION

If you are interested in obtaining an LGV or PCV driving entitlement, we can supply the relevant forms to enable you to apply for your provisional driving licence.

Legislation has changed in recent years and all new drivers are required to take and pass a DSA (Driving Standards Agency) Theory and Hazard Perception test before practical driver training can commence and a driving test taken.

In addition, the new regulations now stipulate that drivers must hold a LGV Category "C" (old Class 2) entitlement before undertaking the LGV C+E (HGV Class 1) driving test.

Stage one:

To apply for your provisional licence, You need to have a medical examination and have form D4 - DVLA Medical Report completed; a qualified General Practitioner must complete this at the time of the examination.

You can use your own GP, (check how much they will charge you) or if you prefer we can arrange a medical for you with our own GP, check which is the cheapest

When the Doctor has completed your medical report (D4), you will then need to complete forms Dl - Application for a Driving Licence (and form D750 - Photo-card licence application if you have the old style paper licence).

All forms, together with your current driving licence and the applicable fee (first provisional licences are free at the present time), should then be sent to the DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BR.

Please note, your provisional driving licence can take up to three weeks to be returned

Stage two:

Before your practical driver training can commence, you will need to study for and successfully undertake the DSA LSV or PCV Theory and Hazard Perception Tests. The theory test comprises of 35 multiple-choice questions of which you must answer a minimum of 30 correctly to achieve a pass The hazard perception test consist of 14 film clips containing developing hazards that you have to identify (note one film clip will contain two developing hazards), you can be awarded a maximum of 5 points for each hazard identified pass mark is 44 out of 75. Please note the number of questions in the theory test increases to 60 from April 07 and increases again to 100 questions in 2008 also the new drivers CPC becomes applicable from September the 10th 2008 for PCV Drivers and from September 10th 2009 for L6V Drivers from these dates there will be 4 parts to the driving tests.

Theory and Hazard Perception Training takes one full day of tuition and practice tests, (currently but this will increase with the new tests) this is normally completed a day or two before your test.

Stage three:

As soon as you have passed the Theory and Hazard Perception Tests we will then arrange a no obligation, Driving Aptitude Assessment. This will enable us to decide with you the most appropriate course to suit your particular requirements.

Having agreed the best course of action, we will then arrange with you suitable times and dates to start your training. Which will prepare you for the DSA Practical Driving test, during which a DSA Approved Driving Instructor will assess your standard of driving to the National Standards.

If you require your training to be conducted at weekends, we will need as much notice as possible as weekends are always in great demand. (Weekend courses are more expensive than weekdays.)

When you book your driver training course with us we will make all the necessary arrangements, book medicals, theory/hazard perception and practical tests etc.

Driving Aptitude Assessment

Delivery: In-cab practical driving skills assessment, conducted on the public highway or on appropriate manoeuvring areas, to assess the candidate's knowledge, current skill levels and training and development needs.
(Instructor/Candidate ratio: 1:1)

Duration: Arranged subject to participant, instructor and training vehicle availability normally lasts for approximately one and half hours.

DSA Theory &. Hazard Perception Training (and arrangement of Tests.)

Note the DSA Test Centres require the two parts of your licence and the booking number of your test before they will allow you to take the test).

Driving Standards Agency regulations now require that individuals wishing to obtain commercial vehicle driving licences (categories: 'C and 'D') must successfully pass a Theory and Hazard Perception test, in addition to the practical driving test. Existing drivers that already hold a LGV Category 'C entitlement (HGV Class 2/3) are exempt from taking the theory test.

Delivery: Classroom based theory sessions covering the above topics, reinforced by practice theory and hazard perception tests under simulated test centre conditions. Guided discussion following the practice theory and hazard perception tests to review candidate's answers and results.

Duration: 1 day, normally delivered on weekdays, although weekend delivery can arranged subject to programme requirements.

LGV/PCV Licence Category C1, C, C+E, Dl, & D. Driver Practical Training

(and arrangement of DSA Practical Driving tests)

Delivery: The majority of driver training being practical in its nature and delivered in-cab on the public highways or on our DSA specification manoeuvring area.
Instruction is structured to give the candidate the widest range of experience and exposure to: varying traffic conditions, road types, urban/rural environments, vehicle handling and manoeuvring, gear selection exercises etc.
(Instructor/Candidate ratio: 1:1)

Duration: Subject to outcomes identified at the initial Driving Aptitude Assessment, however we normally work on 4/5-hour modules (we strongly believe that when people first start driving either LGV or PCV it is extremely taxing, so unless it is otherwise agreed all our training is based on the 4/5 hour modules) to make up practical tuition lessons.

DSA Practical Test Dates

Trainees must produce their complete driving licence (both parts) and the Theory Pass certificate when arranging me test.

All tests are booked through the DSA (Driving Standards Agency), we have little or no control over test dates and times, once a test has been booked the DSA require 3 working days notice to either, cancel, alter or change tests. If the required notice is not given then the fees for that test will be forfeited.

If re-tests are required the DSA insist on three clear working days wait between tests before a re-test will even be considered.

Please note: candidates requiring a re-test may have to wait 2-3 weeks before a DSA test date becomes available
